Curriculum

The Whistler Children’s Centre provides an inclusive learning environment where children are provided with an atmosphere that makes them feel welcome and accepted. Children are viewed as competent individuals with their own ideas and interests. We believe that children have a desire to grow and learn and explore and construct knowledge about the world around them.

We embrace the emergent curriculum approach to Early Childhood Education and our programs reflect the unique skills, interests and experiences of the children, teachers, and families. The curriculum builds on the interests and natural learning styles of the children. Children learn in warm nurturing environments that provide positive, "hands on" learning experiences. Children share their interests working collaboratively on projects that promote the development of the skills children need for later school and life success.

Curriculum:

  • all children are viewed as resourceful and competent learners
  • the program occurs within a warm, nurturing and stimulating environment
  • "hands on" activities encourage problem solving and play based learning
  • offers experiences and challenges where children can freely explore and experiment
  • children are given opportunities for increased decision making, independence, and responsibility
  • a sense of wonder and an appreciation of the beauty of nature, is encouraged
  • attractive learning centre's are designed to encourage a variety of learning activities including: writing, reading, creative art, sensory, discovery, dramatic play, blocks/construction, math & science.
Art Work

The role of the teacher includes:

  • carefully observing children to determine their interests, experiences and needs
  • understanding child development
  • promoting the development of skills necessary for school and life success (includes social, emotional, physical and cognitive/intellectual skills)
  • recognizing "teachable moments" in which the teacher engages the children in meaningful problem solving, planning and learning

Teachers at WCC encourage and facilitate learning and create safe and trusting relationships with the children in their care.  The teachers work hard to provide exciting learning opportunities for children based on their development level and their interests.

Families play an important role at WCC.  Families are viewed as active members of the environment and are invited to participate in the children’s learning environment.
